Stephanie music directed and did arrangements for an adaptation of Aristophanes's PEACE with director Rachel Chavkin and performance artist Taylor Mac as part of Target Margin's Aristophanic Labratory at HERE Arts Center. It was a bluegrassy/absurdist riff on the first moments of the ancient play.

TULLY (IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER) with music , lyrics & orchestrations by Stephanie Johnstone and book, additional lyrics & direction by Joshua William Gelb has been accepted into the New York Musical Theater Festival produced by Michael Height. It is a funny and dark chamber musical inspired by the erotic poetry of the ancient Roman poet Catullus. Stephanie orchestrated the score for piano, clarinet, bassoon, cello, percussion, and harp. Stephanie music directs Reality Show NYC at NYU with the legendary experimental director Elizabeth Swados. This is a devised piece that Liz does every year with NYU students for the incoming NYU freshman. It was part of the NYU administration’s response to four tragic suicides at NYU three years ago. It is refreshingly relevant and life-affirming, and it is a beautiful and humble response to tragedy.

Stephanie and her collaborator Joshua William Gelb host an exploratory workshop for their next project – a partially devised fantasia on pirates. This project explores pirates as they actually were in the Golden Age of Piracy in the early 18th century, how that reality measures up to today’s cultural conception and infatuation with piracy, and the morality of hunger with a dream-like patchwork of songs and scenes with (hopefully eventually) 30-40 actor-musicians. Music functions in the piece only in Brechtian and textural ways.
